Retail and leisure environments often face specific acoustic challenges that can impact the overall experience for customers and staff. The wide variety of uses within a single building often requires significant acoustic intervention. Examples of this are bowling alleys, live music or themed activities venues directly adjacent to more sensitive uses such as a spa, residential properties or a cinema.

Key acoustic constraints need consideration early in the design to ensure adequate acoustic mitigation may be designed into the building at an early stage to mitigate against design risk. Such measures are likely to be in the form of extensive floating floor systems, ‘room-in room’ box construction, mass layer acoustic ceilings and large width partitions. Occasionally, breaks within the structure are required to prevent flanking sound transfer between areas.

Acoustic intervention is often required early within the design in order that acoustic risks may be highlighted and to consider the layout and location of various tenancy types of differing nature.
