Located on Old Street, Roadtrip is a late night bar that offers patrons live music, DJ's and a heated out door terrace. Already holding a late night license of 3am on Friday and Saturday's, it was desired to extend the operating hours during the weekend periods until 5am.
Having previously worked in close partnership with the bar's licensing solicitor, RBA's services were recommended to the client. As the venue is located just outside the Shoreditch Special Policy Area (SPA) the licensing team were concerned that the proposed extension to opening hours in such a sensitive area would be under close scrutiny from both local residents and the London Borough of Hackney. RBA visited the area and discussed with the client the best strategy to address noise concerns and gather precise evidence to support the application.
In order to demonstrate that the proposed extension would have little noise effect on local residents, RBA undertook long term noise monitoring close to the Roadtrip. This was supplemented with spot measurements, observations and a traffic count during a typical Friday night / Saturday morning period.
The measurements demonstrated that noise from patrons exiting under the existing licensing hours was not considered problematic. Also, that the noise generated from the proposed extension would have little effect on the current local noise climate between 2am and 6am should the application be granted.
Following the completion of our measurements and analyses, we were able to provide a report in support of the bar's application for extended opening hours. RBA liaised closely with offices of London Borough of Hackney who, following a review withdrew their original objections to the proposal. The application was then approved at the licensing hearing which RBA attended.
